SWIFTWATER, Pa., August 11, 2004 -- Aventis (NYSE:AVE) today announced thesubmission of a Biologics Licensing Application (BLA) to the U.S computer curriculum. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) for marketing approval of Adacel (Tetanus Toxoid and ReducedDiphtheria Toxoid and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine Adsorbed) for prevention oftetanus, diphtheria and pertussis in adolescents and adults aged 11 through64 years computer curriculum. The BLA for this candidate vaccine was submitted by Aventis Pasteur,the vaccines business of Aventis.

Reported cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, clearly areon the rise in the U.S computer curriculum. In 2002, 9,771 cases were reported to the U.S computer curriculum. Risk of Pertussis
Pertussis is a highly contagious, respiratory disease marked by severe coughing computer curriculum. Its common name, whooping cough, comes from the "whoop" sound childrenand adults make when they try to inhale during or after a severe coughing spell computer curriculum. There are both severe and mild forms of pertussis computer curriculum. Although pertussis can occurat any age, severe pertussis disease usually occurs in infants and young childrenwho are at higher risk for severe pertussis-related complications and even death computer curriculum. Although infants and young children may experience mild pertussis disease,it is more often associated with adolescents and adults computer curriculum. Even in less severecases, infected adolescents and adults can easily transmit the illness to vulnerableinfants and young children who may experience complications associated withthe disease, such as pneumonia, encephalitis and pertussis- related seizures.

About Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis

It is passed from person to person by droplet transmission,usually by breathing in diphtheria bacteria after an infected person has coughed,sneezed or even laughed computer curriculum. It can also be spread by handling used tissues or bydrinking from a glass used by an infected person computer curriculum. Symptoms usually appear twoto five days after infection and begin very much like a common cold computer curriculum. However,symptoms can progress as a membrane grows and covers anywhere from a small patchto most of the throat, potentially blocking the airway computer curriculum.
